The Shawshank Redemption

I’m a movie buff, that’s a given. I have many favorite movies, ever changing, at any given period of time. I have seen The Shawshank Redemption when I was in college, once (or twice) more a couple of years later. And I have seen it now, approximately ten years since that first time. And it just stands the test of time.
That is, my time. I have been young and have changed since then, and the way I think and feel – my principles, self-values, outlook in life – is very different from then. And yet Shawshank still blows me away with its vision, spirit and technical achievement. It is cinema at one of its finest.
The viewing experience is not the same twice, of course. It’s the reason why some movies you liked a lot before did not look so appealing anymore upon the next pass, a significant interval of time later. One changes, as the viewing conditions change. And yet Shawshank kept what it tried to offer me the first time, but also showing me important subtleties that I never saw then. I think it still has more to say to me, and I’ll see it again in a few years. Come to think of it, this – I mean, timelessness – should become my litmus test in determining which, truly, are my Favorite Movies of All Time. (This epiphany made me glad I kept my DVD collection.)
There are movies you grow out of, and movies you keep loving in spite of age and experience. And then there are movies that just grow old with you.
