Whoops. (aka The New Year Post)

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Playing through Transatlanticism on New Year’s eve is not a very good idea, I just realized. (It’s a sad, sad album.) But, there is the token New Year “anthem”, so I guess it suits the occasion somehow.

It’s 10:45 – gotta peel myself off the computer and start with the fireworks. Happy New Year to all!

Posting from a friend’s ASUS EEE PC. Neat!!

The objective is to get a little used to typing in this little keyboard. Therefore, my statements are unnecessarily long. The keyboard seems well-built, and I can imagine being able to touch-type with this thing in a few hours. (I am actually starting to get the feel of it.) The most prominent difficulty, aside from occasional incorrect keypresses, is that the right SHIFT key – a key we all use A LOT – is placed at an unconventional location: beside the / button is the UP cursor instead of SHIFT. So the UP button is inadvertently pressed more often than not.

Still, a few days and it should be a non-issue.

I love the EEE PC! I desire to join The Knights Who Say EEE! But no! I… must… resist…

Christmas Booksplurge

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Just got back from a nice night out with a couple of friends. It was my first time since I arrived where I actually went out to do something… something. (Not counting the short dinner with girlfriend and the obligatory Christmas-eve-grandma’s-place-visit.) Part of the night was spent, um, “appreciating”, the four-storied Fully Booked branch at the Bonifacio High Street (which, I should also note, has opened lots of interesting shops since last time I saw it).

Got three books:

These purchases came with hard justifications, of course:

  1. It’s high time I caught up with the Harry Potter series, not only movies-wise.
  2. The Bartimaeus Trilogy came highly recommended by a friend. Also, there was not a larger paperback edition of this first book in Hong Kong.
  3. I’ve been eyeing Mark Haddon’s book for a while now. When I started reading it in the bookshop, I found it hard to put down. Plus, it’s a quick read.

Er, maybe the justifications weren’t that hard. Anyway, as is usual when in the bookshop, I could never have too many books. It took quite a force of will to resist getting all books that I actually wanted. Finish first! is an ongoing maxim when book-buying (CAVEAT: maxim not always fulfilled). Add to that the great backlog of to-reads around my room. I will never finish all! is also an ongoing truism, sadly.

Still, I have a month-long vacation, and I intend to use it to bury my nose into as much literature as I can. I am about finished with the emotional graphic novel Laika, and, deciding to stop in the middle of His Dark Materials (reason: dwindling interest in Pullman’s characters) will then proceed to Dog in the Night-Time. And so on and so forth.

And finally, the current wishlist.

The Departing

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

I tried sleeping, but it’s no use – so here I am at the computer waiting for 5:30am. I am leaving for Manila in a few hours. A few more hours after that, and I will be in the comfort of my room. (Probably dozing off.)

mugsAs I was frantically moving my stuff to Cheryl’s flat earlier, I paused a few moments upon realizing that, due to severe storage issues, I needed to leave two ceramic faux Charlie Brown / Snoopy mugs behind. They cost HK$5.00 each. But, I have become sort of attached to them. For one, they were the first pieces of drinking containers I owned since I stepped into Hong Kong. (Yes that was a bit sentimental.) But more than that, it was the way it was made that earned its likeability. The mugs themselves weren’t that well-made, and even the drawings aren’t the best – exactly why I love them.

I guess it also reflects my attachment to this apartment I am in now, and will move out from one hour from now. As I am about to leave I feel that kind of sadness I normally have for people I know I am going to miss.

Of course the fact that I probably will not be staying in this apartment anymore when I get back amplifies that sadness.

Oh well, enough with the melodrama. Today I will be home! And I crave for only two things this first day: Girlfriend and Guitar Hero 3.
