Twilight

twilight-poster1

Finally saw Twilight in the theater today. It was… great! Totally deviant from what I’d been expecting. I’ve read excerpts from the book, and as someone who is allergic to too much sap and melodrama, it was pretty clear I would not be able to endure all that romancing about.

What the movie did good was try to get rid of all that cheese as much as it can – and I am very thankful for that! Although it still had to let through some of those (My personal brand of heroin? Really?), it was to a manageable bare minimum. I love that the romance was underplayed: the focus was on having a snappy story, and quite unexpectedly, very likeable characters.

And yet the love between Bella and Edward (main characters) was there, shown in glimpses along scenes, and in the actors’ faces. (Okay maybe just Kristen Stewart’s – her partner does not seem quite at par.) The more minute details of their affair are left as an exercise for the audience’s imaginations… or at least mine.

I also like the way vampires were portrayed, which was: like human beings! And why shouldn’t they act human-like, when they have been assimilating themselves into human society for the longest time? It is thankfully not like the HBO series True Blood where vampires were menacing weirdos with goth makeups. Not to say all vampires should be that way – it’s just refreshing to see something different for a change.

The third half developed into a sort-of chase, with Bad Guys and imminent danger and all that. I found it quite thrilling, and even THE fight sequence was very effective, in spite of being very brief. (Or perhaps, it is because of that briefness that it works.)

To summarize: Twilight was a fun movie to see. It very much reminds me of The Lost Boys, an old contemporary vampire film with a coming-of-age story and some humor thrown in. I love movies like that.

The Late Christmas Song

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

I started this tune on Christmas eve, on a whim. Was supposed to finish it in time for Christmas, but unfortunately I spent most of that day sleeping.

Well now it’s done – all ready for next year! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Post-Singapore, Travelling, Christmas.

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

Merry Christmas!

I meant to post this after I came back from Singapore, but haven’t had found the time. I’ve thought more about that particular trip, and while it’s nothing near life changing – why would it be anyway? – it still ended up a great one.

The best thing, I think, is my living around Little India. Indian food is fantastic, I could eat it everyday, forever. (And actually I did eat Indian food for days at a time!) It was a bit disorienting at first, being in Little India: apart from tourists, everyone is of Indian origin! (Well, obviously.) But I found that they are nice people, as nice as Hongkongers in general and such. A few days and I felt right at home. The places itself is great – really narrow streets lined up with small houses and buildings that are inherently exotic. Really love that place.

Apparently I spoke too soon about my impressions of SIGGRAPH. Since my last blog I was able to see the Arts Gallery and Emerging Technologies Exhibit, a small place where I spent a huge amount of time in, and the Electronic Theater where they show some of the best works (shorts, commercials) in computer graphics for the year. I would say that these two things alone are almost worth the entire SIGGRAPH experience.

Almost? you say. This is where the student volunteer thing comes in. I have met new friends and have been keeping in touch with some of them (thanks, Facebook!). The next SIGGRAPH Asia is in Yokohama, Japan – near Tokyo where the Ghibli Museum is. I am hoping I could get accepted next year as a volunteer – yes, it’s Japan, but I am mostly looking forward to seeing my new acquaintances again.

Another great thing about Singapore is the coffee shops. There’s one along Orchard Road, and the name escapes me but it is a very popular place. This shop sells different types of coffee from different places in the world. (It has Jamaican Blue Mountain!) I would have been ready to try it out if not for the lousy wifi, something I needed to have at that time. The Mint Museum of Toys has a cafe/restaurant at the ground floor, a nice place to hang out. I stayed at the cafe for a bit as I used their wifi, which is not really for the public but the staff were kind enough to let me access it.

Anddd… the Singapore Public Library. Enough said!

So… oh okay, I miss Singapore.

So I thought about travelling. I’ve come across the realization that there are just so much awesome things to see in the world, and until recently I have not been doing anything to witness at least some of them. I will from now on start to plan plans to go places, and I have embedded the idea of travelling into my conscious. I will strive for different experiences, of seeing natural wonders and new cultures alike… I should, I should.

China is a good target, but that is being vague. It is so huge that seeing everything there might not be enough for one person’s lifetime. For now I am content with visiting a city, such as Beijing, but most of all I want to see more nature stuff. Chinese friends have recommended Guilin and the Yunnan Province (it itself is large that I have yet to find out which places are good for exploration). These are two places that are in the south of China – easily accessible from where I am.

But also, first things first. I haven’t even seen most of the great places in the Philippines! Such shame. But that I can redeem easy enough. Philippines is going to be my primary objective – conquer it and I get the certificate to conquer others.

In 2009, I expect a lot of Seeing Stuff. Looking forward to it!

So what’s news?

****

I have recently developed a liking to red wine and am now trying to learn how different kinds of them taste like, and from there figure out what I really want.

About a month ago I bought a Lomo Compact Automat (LCA). It is a film camera and it takes nice pictures. Some early photos of said cam upon package’s arrival at my doorstep:

With the addition of the Novation RemoteZero SL and Ableton Live to my “musician/arranger’s arsenal”, I am now ready to start afresh and bring my pop to electronic music! :D

The Convention

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

So this is the last day of SIGGRAPH Asia 2008 – the first in Asia, by the way – and my sixth day in Singapore. I am currently doing the morning shift which is basically noneventful – hence this post.

So far, the convention is okay. Not great, as maybe I haven’t yet seen the things worth seeing (such as the infamous art gallery). I was able to attend some lectures for academic papers, but unfortunately not the stuff I was most interested in. Shifts are.. well, they’re mundane tasks, expectedly, but I wish I could be doing more. Working at the Network Operations Center, perhaps?

As for Singapore, I was able to go around a bit. Visited the Singapore Art Museum, which had its shares of HUH? art (too avant-garde for me), but also really wonderful, wonderful works (the featured Korean stuff, in particular). Also rode the Singapore Flyer – a huge ferris wheel – with fellow student volunteers. Went also to the Marina Barrage, a great place to hang out and contemplate. And finally, got together with old college friends, very fun, really.

So overall this experience is okay, but not exceptional. Well of course the trip is not over yet, but I am not really expecting too much. Although I am looking forward to drinking some smartly-picked (I hope) bottle of wine with another good friend.

I miss Hong Kong!
